Gas Leaks

Gas Leak Facts

Natural Gas is lighter than air and will rise above the leaking source. Natural gas is colorless and odorless. Utility companies add mercaptan to the gas to make it smell like rotten eggs to help the presence of a leak. Natural gas serves nearly 66.7 million homes according to the American Gas Association.

Propane is heavier than air, which will accumulate toward the floor surface near the fuel burning appliance. It is one of the most versatile, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly fuel sources in the world. Propane is used in more than 48 million homes for heating and cooking appliances.

Gas Leaks

Unauthorized electrical grounding to Natural Gas Meters

Xcel Energy has recently seen a steady increase in grounding attachments to the supply side of the meter. This type of attachment negatively impacts the cathodic protection system on the gas system that is intended to prevent corrosion and leaks on natural gas pipelines. Not to be mistaken with the yellow tracer wire used for underground gas pipe locating, the grounding attachments are typically a bare copper or green wire connected to the home itself. If you believe you may have an issue, please contact Code Red Heart or your Utility Company for verification.
